Romanian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Latin ūva with a protethic "a". May have been considered archaic even as early as the 17th century, but was preserved as the name of a variety of grapes in Oltenia. Replaced by strugure. However, Aromanian has preserved auã as the standard word for grape.
