From Latin austērus (dry, harsh, sour, tart),[1] from Ancient Greek αὐστηρός (austērós, bitter, harsh), having the specific meaning "making the tongue dry" (originally used of fruits, wines), related to αὔω (aúō, to singe), αὖος (aûos, dry).
