From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Latin austērus (dry, harsh, sour, tart), from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Ancient Greek αὐστηρός (austērós, bitter, harsh), having the specific meaning "making the tongue dry" (originally used of fruits, wines), related to αὔω (aúō, to singe), αὖος (aûos, dry).
