Particularly: “(XIIIe siècle) bast, qui a supplanté en ce sens l’ancien français somme → voir bête de somme. Du latin populaire *bastum « ce qui porte », substantif verbal de *bastare « porter », emprunté grec ancien βαστάζειν, bastazein (« porter un fardeau »).”
