Northern Kurdish

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Uncertain. Perhaps from ba (wind) +‎ şûr (sour), signifying the direction from which the wind that blows from where the salty waters are. Perhaps an ancient mythological concept to seperate "good wind" (northern wind) from "bad wind" (southern wind). Compare başûr. Compare bakur and also Gurani واگەرم (wagerm, south; lit. "warm wind").
