başûr

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Northern Kurdish

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Uncertain. Perhaps from ba (wind) +‎ şûr (sour), signifying the direction from which the wind that blows from where the salty waters are. Perhaps an ancient mythological concept to separate "good wind" (southern wind) from "bad wind" (northern wind). Compare bakur and also Gurani واگەرم (wagerm, south; lit. "warm wind").
