Etymology

From Latin ballaena, variant of bālaena (a whale), from Ancient Greek φάλαινα (phálaina), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰleh₃- (to inflate, blow, swell), from *bʰel- (to bloom).

Cognate with Old Spanish ballena and Mozarabic balléna.
