From Middle High German befürhten, bevürhten, from Old High German biforhten, bifurihtōn, biforhtōn, biforahtōn, from Proto-Germanic *bifurhtijaną, *bifurhtōną, equivalent to be- +‎ fürchten. Cognate with Middle Low German bevrüchten, English befright.
