From Proto-Germanic *batizô. Cognate with Old Frisian betera (West Frisian better), Old Saxon betiro (Low German beter), Low German beter, Old High German bezziro (German besser), Old Norse betri (Danish bedre, Swedish bättre), Gothic 𐌱𐌰𐍄𐌹𐌶𐌰 (batiza).
