From earlier biasmare, from Old Italian blasmare, borrowed from Old French blasmer, from Vulgar Latin *blastēmāre, present active infinitive of *blastēmō, from Ecclesiastical Latin, Late Latin blasphēmō, whence also the inherited Italian doublet of bestemmiare.
