bimetallic strip (plural bimetallic strips)

  1. A thin strip made from a sandwich of two different metals, the metals having different rates of expansion with temperature, so that an increase in temperature causes the strip to bend one way, and a decrease causes it to bend the other; used in various devices such as thermostats.
