The middle section from Latin cōnfirmātiō (firm), assimilated into birm +‎ -ovka.

Usage notes[edit]

  • This word does not describe the sacrament itself (that is birmovanie), but the occasion, the ritual, the celebration, of conferring the sacrament. It is only used by Slovak Catholics; the Slovak Lutherans use the word konfirmácia.
