The middle section of Latin confirmatio, or firm, assimilated into birm + -ovka, a suffix signifying an activity.

birmovka f ‎(nominative plural birmovky, declension pattern of žena)

  1. The ritual of the Catholic sacrament of confirmation.

Usage notes[edit]

This word does not describe the sacrament itself (that is birmovanie), but the occasion, the ritual, the celebration, of conferring the sacrament. It is only used by Slovak Catholics; the Slovak Lutherans use the word konfirmácia.
