Slovak

Etymology

The middle section from Latin cōnfirmātiō (firm), assimilated into birm +‎ -ovka.

Noun

birmovka f (genitive singular birmovky, nominative plural birmovky, genitive plural birmoviek, declension pattern of žena)

  1. (religion, Christianity) The ritual of the Catholic sacrament of confirmation.

Usage notes

This word does not describe the sacrament itself (that is birmovanie), but the occasion, the ritual, the celebration, of conferring the sacrament. It is only used by Slovak Catholics; the Slovak Lutherans use the word konfirmácia.
