Etymology

From brèid (patch, kerchief, woman's headdress) +‎ -each (noun suffix). Stems from the tradition of Highland women wearing a white linen kerchief after their wedding night; maidens wore the stiom, a headband, but were otherwise bareheaded until marriage.
