English[edit]

Etymology[edit]

brain +‎ dance, from its relatively complex (i.e. intellectual) structure and use of elements of dance music. Coined by the label Rephlex Records.

Noun[edit]

  1. (music) IDM (intelligent dance music).
    • 2014, Piers Martin, Aphex Twin: ‘His music is a perfect mix of mystery and adrenaline’ (in The Guardian) [1]
For the devoted, this is a rare chance to devour an hour of box-fresh blockbuster braindance that might somehow bring them closer to their master.

Usage notes[edit]

Some people favour the term braindance over intelligent dance music because it avoids the snobbish implication that other forms of music are unintelligent.
