From Ottoman Turkish برج (burc, zodiac, constellation, tower), from Arabic بُرْج (burj), from Classical Syriac ܒܘܪܓܐ (burgāʾ, tower, columbarium), from Ancient Greek πύργος (púrgos) or Latin burgus, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰerǵʰ- (high) (compare English borough).
