Etymology[edit]

Possibly from Proto-Turkic *yīr-, *yï̄r- (to split lengthwise; to break, tear), in which case a doublet of yırtmaq (wear out; rend). Compare with Crimean Tatar cırtmaq.

Alternatively, onomatopoeic.
