Etymology
Uncertain origin. Possible origins include:
- (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Latin capitulum;
- (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Arabic مَقْبِض (maqbiḍ, “handle”), with the ma- being confused with the Portuguese feminine indefinite article uma;
- (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Arabic قَابِض (qābiḍ, “tongs, clamp”);
- cavidado, past participle of cavidar (“to protect”), with the suggestion that coat hangers were used to protect clothes from dust.
