From older Sicilian *cacoccia, from Arabic خُرْشُوف(ḵuršūf). Based on the forms *carsoffa (*carsòffula) that gave palatized *carcioffa (carciòffula), then another metathetic *carcoccia (carcòcciula)[1]. Compare Spanish alcachofa, Portuguese alcachofra, Catalan carxofa, Italian carciofo.
