Borrowed from Old Occitan cavilla (compare modern cavilha), from Vulgar Latin *cāvic(u)la, from Classical Latin clāvicula, diminutive of clāvis (key). Compare the doublets cavicchia (inherited from Latin), clavicola (borrowed from Latin).
