1. (statistics) To take a sub-sample of a sample so as to include in the sub-sample one out of every hundred (i.e. 1%) of the original sample.

     If independent samples are needed, it is useful to decimate (take one element every 10) or centimate (one in 100) the chain (known as thinning).
