chest rub (plural chest rubs)

  1. (emergency medicine) A form of applying pain to the sternum of the patient wherein the responder applies strong pressure with his knuckles in an attempt to establish the patient's level of consciousness.
    It looked like this muscular fireman was hurting my grandmother applying a chest rub as he attended to her fainting but later we understood he was just trying to get her to come to.
  2. A topical medication applied to the chest in the hope of alleviating the symptoms of a cold.
