1759, "to steal, filch", probably a derivative of chippe (compare chiffe (old cloth, rag)) in the sense of "to hide something of little value", from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle English chip, chippe (fragment, worthless thing) from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old English ċipp (splinter, beam) from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Germanic *kippaz, *kipaz (beam, log).
