Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic чрѣда (črěda), from Proto-Slavic *čerda (herd, flock), from Proto-Indo-European *kerdʰ-. Doublet of cârd and ciurdă.

Compare (obsolete) Serbo-Croatian čreda, Russian череда́ (čeredá, sequence, train), English herd.
