clúdach

[edit]Etymology
[edit]From a variant of Middle Irish clúdugud (“clothing, covering”),[2] from clúit (“shelter, cover”) (modern clúid). MacBain suggests a loanword from Middle English clout (“piece of cloth”),[3] but this is difficult to reconcile both semantically and phonologically. A derivation of some kind from Proto-Indo-European *ḱel- (“to cover, hide, protect”) seems likely.
