From Old Galician-Portuguese coallar, quallar (compare Galician callar), from Vulgar Latin *coāglāre/*quāglāre (compare Spanish cuajar), from Latin coāgulāre, present active infinitive of coāgulō. Doublet of coagular, a borrowing.
