Inherited from Old Spanish quajar, from Vulgar Latin *coaglāre/ *quaglāre, from syncopation of Latin coāgulāre. Doublet of coagular, a borrowing. Compare Aragonese cuallar, Asturian cuayar, Catalan quallar, Galician callar.
