Etymology

Uncertain. Probably a derivative of the expressive root coc (cf. cucă (peak, top), cucuia (rise, climb)). Less likely etymologies proposed include a link with cocoș, or a derivative of Latin cucutium, or a Vulgar Latin root *concaptiāre.

Verb

a cocoța (third-person singular present cocoață, past participle cocoțat) 1st conj.

  1. to clamber up, climb up, mount
  2. to alight, perch on top; place something at the top (or too high)
  3. (figurative) to be promoted quickly (in a job)
