From Middle Irish cotlaid (compare Scottish Gaelic caidil, Manx caddil), from Old Irish ·cotli, prototonic of con·tuili, from *kom-tulī-, from Proto-Celtic *toleyo-, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)tel- ‎(be still).
