[edit]From Middle Dutch kricken, crieken (“to creak; crack”), from Proto-West Germanic *krakōn (“to crash, crack, creak”), related to Proto-Germanic *krakōną, ultimately of imitative origin. Related to Middle English creken (“to creak”). More at English creak.
