Probably from a Vulgar Latin root *cotītus (“sharpened”), from *cotīre (“sharpen”), from Latin cōs, cōtis (“whetstone”), or from *acutitus, from *acutīre, from acūtus (“sharp”). Compare Aromanian cutsut, cãtsut. Also, cf. ascuțit, cute.
