From German Zucker, from Italian zucchero, from Arabic سُكَّر(sukkar), from Persian شکر(šekar), from Sanskrit शर्करा (śárkarā, ground or candied sugar, originally meaning grit, gravel), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱorkeh₂ (gravel, boulder). Cognate to French sucre, from Spanish azúcar.
