From Proto-Katuic *palaj, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *pləjʔ. Cognate with Eastern Bru palâi.

The development of the presyllable here is irregular, but is shared by certain Katuic languages (cf. Ngeq kallaj ~ kalaj).
