Etymology

[edit]

From dé- +‎ manger.

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /de.mɑ̃.ʒe/
  • Audio:(file)

Verb

[edit]

démanger

  1. (transitive) to itch, to cause to feel itchy
    Synonym: gratter
Vos doigts vous démangent.Your fingers itch.
  2. (transitive, figuratively) to cause to have the desire to, to cause to itch for action
L’envie d’avoir un bébé me démange.I really want to have a baby.

Conjugation

[edit]

This is a regular -er verb, but the stem is written démange- before endings that begin with -a- or -o- (to indicate that the -g- is a "soft" /ʒ/ and not a "hard" /ɡ/). This spelling change occurs in all verbs in -ger, such as neiger and manger.
