Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *deinas/*dinas (compare Proto-Slavic *dьnь), from Proto-Indo-European *déynos, ultimately from *dyew- (to shine). Baltic cognates include Aukštaitian Lithuanian and Latvian diena and Samogitian Lithuanian dėina.
