From Proto-Slavic *dъlgъ, from Germanic (compare Gothic 𐌳𐌿𐌻𐌲𐍃 (dulgs)). Cognate with Upper Sorbian dołh, Czech dluh, Polish dług, Russian долг (dolg), Old Church Slavonic дългъ (dŭlgŭ).
