Vietnamese

Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Vietic *k-joːk, probably of Sino-Tibetan origin. Cognate with Thavung kəjoːk⁷. Compare Proto-Karen *joɁᴰ and Burmese မျောက် (myauk).

Although not certain, the problematic presyllable *k- in Vietic might be due to analogy to other terms for monkey such as *k-mah and *k-vaɲ.
