From Sicilian Medieval Latin doana, dovana (attested from the end of the 12th century), from Andalusian Arabic *duwān, an alteration of the Arabic دِيوَان (dīwān, administrative office), borrowed from Classical Persian دیوان (dēwān, dīwān, customs, divan).
