From Proto-Germanic *augōdurz, equivalent to ēage (eye) +‎ duru (door). Cognate with Old High German ougatora, Gothic 𐌰𐌿𐌲𐌰𐌳𐌰𐌿𐍂𐍉 (augadaurō).
