From Proto-Germanic *aiþaz, whence also Old English āþ, Old Frisian ēth, Old Saxon ēth, Old High German eid, Gothic 𐌰𐌹𐌸𐍃 (aiþs). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₁óytos (oath).
