[edit]Usually derived from Proto-Indo-European *h₂lek- (“to protect”), but it could instead be from a non-Indo-European substrate language.[1] Comparable to Lithuanian alkas, Gothic 𐌰𐌻𐌷𐍃 (alhs, “temple”).
