Etymology

Assimilation of ent- before f-. In Middle High German, assimilated and non-assimilated forms were used interchangeably; compare enphinden alongside entvinden. Eventually, the form emp- became standardised in three verb stems. Compare the similar assimilation -ntb--mp- in empor, Wimper, and Himper (archaic variant of Himbeere).
