Etymology[edit]

With the assimilation -ntb--mp- (as in Wimper) from earlier entbor, itself an alteration of Middle High German embor, enbor, enbore, from a phrase en bor (to(wards) (a) height), of which the second word is from Old High German bor (height, summit, peak). Related to English bear (verb).
