Etymology[edit]
With the assimilation -ntb- → -mp- (as in Wimper) from earlier entbor, itself an alteration of Middle High German embor, enbor, enbore, from a phrase en bor (“to(wards) (a) height”), of which the second word is from Old High German bor (“height, summit, peak”). Related to English bear (verb).
