Borrowed from Javanese ꦲꦼꦩ꧀ꦥꦭ꧀ (empal, slices of spiced meat fried in coconut oil), from Old Javanese ĕmpal (flesh, meat). Compare to Sundanese ᮈᮙ᮪ᮕᮜ᮪ (empal).
