Etymology[edit]

From Esperanto li (he), possibly a calque of Tok Pisin em.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /li/
  • (file)
  • Rhymes: -i

Particle[edit]

li

  1. Precedes the predicate, unless the subject is only mi or only sina.
    1. (especially in conjunction with e) Marks a verb.
    2. (between multiple predicates) And.

Usage notes[edit]

When the subject is mi or sina alone, use of li between additional predicates varies. Some speakers use li in all instances but the first. Others prefer to start a new sentence, repeating the subject.
