[edit]13th century. From encrucillar (“to cross”), derived from cruz (“cross”), from Latin crux (“cross”), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ker- (“to turn, to bend”). Cognate with Portuguese encruzilhada and Spanish encrucijada.
