English[edit]

Noun[edit]

epiblem (countable and uncountable, plural epiblems)

  1. Synonym of rhizodermis
    • 1895, Emily Lovira Gregory, Elements of Plant Anatomy, page 120:
Beginning now with the root of the vascular ciyptogams, it may be added that in these the epiblem is not replaced by a periderm, although a well developed hypoderma frequently takes the place of the epiblem layer, which dies and disappears.
    • 1936, Transactions of the Royal Society of South Africa - Volume 23, page 4:
In the case of Anthephora pubescens, when epiblem cells and root hairs die, the cells do not lose their contents, which forms a coagulated mass that also takes on a red colour with Congo Red.
    • 1965, J. Macura, Vlastimil Vančura, Plant Microbes Relationships:
An aseptate mycelium developed very intensively on the root surface and in their close vicinity and penetrated through the root hair and directly through the epiblem cells into the roots of the host plant.
