Etymology

Borrowed from Ecclesiastical Latin, Late Latin eremita, from Ancient Greek ἐρημίτης (erēmítēs), from ἐρῆμος (erêmos, uninhabited) +‎ -ίτης (-ítēs). Doublet of hermit.
