Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Tocharian *erkent (whence also Tocharian A arkant), but from there uncertain. Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *h₁regʷ- (to be dark) (cognate with Ancient Greek Ἔρεβος (Érebos), Old Norse røkkr (twilight), etc.) or Proto-Indo-European *h₂erǵ- (white, shining) (cognate with Latin argentum and semantically akin to English black <> bleach).

Adjective

[edit]

erkent

  1. black, dark

Usage notes

[edit]
  • This word was often used as a compound, as Tocharian B was particularly agglutinative.
