French[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Borrowed from Italian scarpino, from scarpa (“shoe”).
Pronunciation[edit]
Noun[edit]
escarpin m (plural escarpins)
- high-heeled woman's shoe
Usage notes[edit]
- used for shoes with stiletto heels and a generally open design. It may be closed- or open-toed and strappy (sandal-like) or simple (court shoe-like). By contrast, heeled shoes with thick soles or with wedge heels are referred to as compensées (platforms), and closed lace-up shoes as bottines (à talon) (ankle boots, booties).
