From Old French espagneul or espaigneul, probably from Old Occitan espaignol, espainol, from a Vulgar Latin *Hispaniolus (of Spain), from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Latin hispānus (Spanish or Hispanic) with the diminutive suffix -olus.[1]
